Electric Forklift Steering Hard to Turn? 6 Common Causes and Fixes
A forklift that suddenly becomes difficult to steer isn’t just annoying — it’s a safety hazard that slows down every pallet move. Before calling a technician, check these six common culprits.
1. Low Hydraulic Fluid or Contamination
The most frequent cause. Electric forklifts use a hydraulic power steering system driven by a separate pump motor. Low fluid level, air in the lines, or contaminated oil increases steering effort dramatically. Check the reservoir and top off with ISO VG 32 or 46 hydraulic oil as specified by the manufacturer.

2. Worn Steering Cylinder Seals
Internal leakage in the steering cylinder means hydraulic pressure bypasses the piston instead of moving it. Symptoms: steering feels “loose” at center and requires extra force near full lock.
3. Steering Pump Motor Failure
If you hear a whining noise when turning, the electric steering pump motor may be failing. On BaGong models, the steering pump uses a dedicated AC motor — independent from the drive motor — so failure won’t immobilize the forklift.
| Symptom | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Hard steering both directions | Low fluid | Refill & bleed |
| Stiff only at low speed | Pump wear | Replace pump |
| Jerky/uneven steering | Contaminated oil | Flush & refill |
| Noise + hard steering | Pump cavitation | Check suction line |
4. Mechanical Binding in the Steering Linkage
Inspect the kingpins, tie rod ends, and axle pivot points. Lack of grease causes metal-on-metal friction. OSHA recommends greasing steering linkage every 250 operating hours. Also check for physical damage from impacts.
5. Tire Pressure or Uneven Wear
Under-inflated solid tires or uneven wear patterns increase steering resistance. For cushion tires, check for flat spots. See our tire comparison guide for correct specifications.
6. Electronic Power Steering (EPS) Fault
Newer forklifts with EPS (fully electric steering, no hydraulics) may show error codes when the torque sensor or ECU fails. Check the dashboard for fault indicators — code E-04 on BaGong controllers signals steering system errors.
FAQ
Q: Can I drive with stiff steering temporarily?
No — it’s an OSHA violation if steering effort exceeds manufacturer specs. A driver must be able to steer with one hand.
Q: How often should I service the steering system?
Hydraulic fluid: check weekly. Full flush: every 2,000 hours. Grease fittings: every 250 hours.
